Local illustrator puts cuddly new twist on Cornwall’s iconic snack
‘A bakery, a seaweed topped man and a packet of sparkly flour are just some of the magical ingredients that make up the story of Teddy Pasty…’
St Ives based designer and illustrator Emily Fishpool introduces magical children’s character Teddy Pasty in his first book ‘The Bakery’.
Inspired by the iconic St Ives Cornish pasty and influenced by Japanese Kawaii characters, Teddy Pasty started life as the youthful doodle creation of Emily and her twin sister during one of many camping trips to Treen in Cornwall. Several years later Emily relocated to St Ives where, whilst out walking with her sister one day, they remembered the teddy bear pasty character they had created. Emily started experimenting with designs and creating handmade cuddly Teddy Pasty plush toys, which she now sells from her studio in St Ives.
‘I was excited to bring Teddy Pasty to life, and started thinking about writing a story book for children. After talking to parents and people in the publishing industry, I decided it should be an illustrated book which could be read as a bedtime story, aimed at 3 – 5 year olds.’
In her first book ‘The Bakery’, Teddy Pasty is introduced to the world and the story tells of how he came to life in the magical bakery by the sea. Subsequent stories will introduce more characters, such as ‘The Twin Scones’ (one has jam on top, one has cream on top and they’re always arguing), the contrary ‘Monsieur Croissant’ and ‘Pirate Seagull’ (friend or foe?). The St Ives Teddy Pasty series follows the adventures of all the characters in the bakery.
Emily grew up in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. In 1998 she moved to London to study Graphic Design and Illustration at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Following graduation in 2002 she remained in London working within the industry. Based in-house for companies such as The Guardian, Paperchase and Oasis, she gained the experience necessary to go it alone as a freelancer and built up a list of clients including Topshop, Mulberry and the Fairtrade Foundation. In 2010 she embarked on a new venture with her now husband Matt Sephton as they relocated to St Ives, Cornwall. After setting up her own design agency Studio Fishpool in St Ives, she has been inspired by the creativity which embodies the town to develop her passion for illustration, resulting in the release of her first book. Emily’s ultimate aim is to create a replica bakery in her little studio where she’ll sell, alongside the books and merchandise, trays and trays of cuddly baked goods!
The book will be available to buy at the Teddy Pasty Bakery, Sloop Studios, Back Lane, St Ives, Cornwall, TR26 1LS.
