Nitin Bhasin – Cornwall: Design and the Built Environment

Report
Nitin Bhasin concluded the first series of Trust Talks appropriately by opening his talk to a lively discussion with the audience. Nitin is currently working on projects that create a framework to support better design in Cornwall and has been responsible for establishing and running the Cornwall Design Review Panel. The purpose of the Panel is to encourage design excellence in both the public and private sectors. Its role is to review development proposals within Cornwall and provide constructive criticism.

Nitin began by stating an objective to promote design and better quality building, Planning has been seen as an obstacle and Localism is intended to be enabling, informing and encouraging participation.

The speaker invited the audience to think about design firstly in terms of their own personal choices and invited the speculation; how does the Council develop rules on an even platform that does not engender uniform and disinterested design. The challenge: to raise quality in setting policy and guidance and find universal principles.
