This year more than ever, St Ives was the place to be to welcome in the New Year. The town was packed with pirates, Middle Earth characters and other mythological creatures. The atmosphere was buzzing, and families and couples gathered in festive mood.
New Year in St Ives has become one of the most well-known of any UK celebrations with vibrant street entertainment, fireworks and bizarre combinations of fancy dress. The town comes alive as the night time party kicks off with revellers roaming from bar to bar becoming part of the street party. Kids marvel at the costumes as they catch a glimpse of their favourite TV hero wandering past whilst adults take in the eclectic atmosphere as a new year draws closer.
New Year in St Ives is special in so many ways. Some just wander through the streets taking it all in, while others dip into the many bars St Ives has to offer.
With its New Year celebrations growing in popularity, St Ives is changing its image. The town is now becoming famous not just for its beaches and summer sun but for its ability to come out of its hibernation through the blustery winter months and metamorphose every year into Cornwall’s answer to a Caribbean Carnival.
Now turning into two of the UK’s favourite New Year’s Eve destinations, both Looe and St Ives offer plenty of atmosphere and even a competitive vibe to warm up the winter. In St Ives, roads are closed to visitors for what’s effectively a massive street party. Hordes of visitors from across the UK snake around the harbour in crazy costumes. St Ives streets sway to busking samba bands and the crowds spill out of brightly-lit pubs and cafes in time for midnight fireworks on the seafront: Happy 2019 St Ives!
